Native Americans and other indigenous peoples have used smudging as a cleansing and clearing ritual since ancient times. Although some view it as a “new age” thing, there is actually modern science to back up its benefits.
Scientific Benefits
There are numerous scientific benefits to smudging your space. It cleanses the air of unwanted bacteria. In fact, scientific studies have found that up to 94% of bacteria is killed off for up to 24 hours after smudging. It clears the air of dust, pet dander, mold spores, pollen and other allergens. It produces negative ions, which increases overall well-being, improves mental focus and memory and increases energy, so it can be used as a natural anti-depressant. It also improves sleep patterns due to regulating serotonin levels. It calms and relaxes the body, relieving stress and tension.
Spiritual Benefits
Indigenous people and those that are spiritually inclined use smudging for other ethereal purposes. Smudging can clear negative energy from emotions held in a room, including anger, anxiety, fear, depression and grief. It can cleanse objects that hold negative energy from previous owners. It increases clarity and awareness, heightens wisdom and quickens the senses.
Personally I have used smudging to clear my home of negative energy after certain people have visited, as well as to rid ghosts and spirits that my kids and I have experienced in our homes.
Smudging can be done with different herbs including sage, cedar, sweetgrass, among others depending on your desires. Sage is used for healing, as well as to bless, cleanse and heal a person, object or house. White sage is for purifying and clearing negative energy. Black sage is for protection. Cedar is used for protection and cleansing. Sweetgrass is used for blessing and reminding us of the feminine essence of the Earth.
Try smudging your home or office for any of its numerous benefits. You have nothing to lose, but much to gain with this process.
